HORIZON Europe WORM Project:
Development of Sustainability Criteria for Sustainable Humanitarian Procurement Policies
In recent years, the humanitarian sector has been seeking ways to improve the sustainability of its programs. It is increasingly recognised that procurement and sourcing decisions can be a powerful mechanism for implementing sustainability in the sector. Approximately two-thirds of the humanitarian budgets are allocated to procurement (Falasca & Zobel, 2011; Moshtari, Altay, Heikkilä, & Gonçalves, 2021; Stumpf, Besiou, & Wakolbinger, 2023). WORM, an EU-funded project under EU Horizon, considers humanitarian procurement as a gatekeeper towards sustainable humanitarian supply chains (see more about the WORM project here: https://wormproject.eu)
Sustainable procurement can be defined as (UNECE, 2019) a process whereby organisations meet their needs for goods, services, works and utilities in a way that achieves value for money on a whole-life basis in terms of generating benefits not only to the organisation, but also to society and the economy whilst minimising damage to the environment
The WORM consortium aims to collaborate with humanitarian actors and other stakeholders to develop a holistic set of sustainability criteria and sustainable procurement guidelines that practitioners can use to operationalize sustainability within sourcing decision-making. We, hereby, ask for your participation in this short survey to help understand the current perception of sustainability across the humanitarian sector. This serves as a foundation for developing the criteria and guidelines. Our goal is to capture a wide range of perspectives, and thus, we would be grateful if you could forward this document to whom it may concern and interest. Please note that we are not asking you to represent your organisation but rather to hear your opinion as an actor in the humanitarian sector. The survey requires approximately 10 minutes of your time, and we greatly appreciate your participation.
